Sound familiar?

Busy crews, steady revenue, and still not sure where the money went.

We've sat in the accounting seat at GCs, subs, heavy civil and equipment rental companies. These problems show up at nearly every growing contractor.

01

You find out a job lost money after it's over.Costs post late, change orders sit unbilled, and the job report comes too late to do anything about it.

02

"Profitable" on paper, short on cash.Retainage, slow pay apps and underbillings tie up your cash, and nobody sees the crunch coming 13 weeks out.

03

The bank or surety wants numbers you can't produce.WIP schedules, accrual-basis statements and clean balance sheets are holding up your line of credit or bonding capacity.

04

The books are months behind, or just wrong.Unreconciled accounts, mystery balances, and a CPA who has to clean things up every year before tax time.

05

The whole operation runs through you.Approvals, billing, payroll questions. Processes live in people's heads, and growth just means more chaos.

06

Spreadsheets everywhere, systems that don't talk.Double entry between field, PM and accounting tools, with no single version of the truth.

Why J²

Most firms fix the numbers or the process. We fix both.

Bad numbers usually come from broken workflows. A bookkeeper can tidy the ledger, but if billing, purchasing and time capture are still broken, it's a mess again in 90 days. J² pairs a construction controller with a process improvement specialist, so the fix actually holds.

We don't just report the numbers. We tell you what they mean and what to do next.

Who we serve

Built for construction. Open to any business that's ready to grow up.

Our sweet spot is contractors doing $2M–$25M a year, big enough that the back office is breaking but not yet ready for a full-time CFO.

We also work with businesses outside construction. If you have revenue, employees and a back office that can't keep up, we can help.

Common questions

Before you call

Do you do taxes?
No. We handle everything accounting except tax preparation. We work alongside your CPA and give them clean, reconciled books, which usually makes tax season faster and cheaper.
What's a fractional controller?
A fractional controller is an experienced controller you get for a set number of hours or deliverables each month, for a fraction of a full-time salary. You get senior oversight: a managed close, reporting, job cost review, cash planning and a strategic partner who understands construction.
How much does it cost?
Every engagement is custom quoted based on your transaction volume, number of active jobs, the condition of your books and what you need. Cleanups and setups are usually a fixed project fee; ongoing work is a monthly retainer. You'll get a clear quote after the discovery call. No surprise hourly bills.
We already have a bookkeeper. Can you still help?
Yes. A common setup is keeping your in-house bookkeeper and bringing us in as the controller layer: we review their work, manage the close, build job cost and WIP reporting, and train and support your team.
Do we have to be in San Antonio?
No. We're based in San Antonio and happy to meet in person locally, but most of our work is done securely and remotely, so we serve clients across the US.
What software do you work in?
We work inside the accounting and construction systems you already use. If your current setup is holding you back, we'll help you pick, set up and migrate to something better, and connect it to how your field and office actually work.
How long does it take to get started?
After the discovery call we usually need a short look at your books and workflows before we can quote. Once you approve the scope, we start onboarding right away. Cleanup projects come first when needed, and monthly work starts from there.
